The nonprofit not only buys and reliably tests up to 8,000 products a year — independent of advertising or business influence — it also advocates for safety through investigative journalism. Consumer Reports helped ensure that back-up cameras became standard equipment on cars as of 2018. While it is self-sustaining through earned income, philanthropic partners and dollars allow it to take more risks and study more products.
