Consumer Advocate: Scammers continue scare tactics related to Social Security numbers

South Bend Tribune - 2/8/2019 - Marjorie Stephens Better Business Bureau - The Better Business Bureau has received several reports about consumers receiving fraudulent phone calls about illegal activity involving their Social Security Number somewhere in a different state. In a BBB Scam Tracker report, a consumer reported a call from a “James Conrad,” purportedly an “Officer of Tax.” “James” told the consumer she committed tax fraud and would be served with a warrant and that he had her maiden name and current address, then proceeded to tell her they found her fingerprints and blood in an abandoned house with tons of cocaine. The consumer laughed and told him it was against the law for him to call her. He hung up! This was a happy ending. Not all reports are.
