Employment scam appears to target oil & gas workers
KHOU.com - 3/21/2017 - Jason Miles - HOUSTON - There’s a new warning if you’re looking for work in the energy industry. Watch out for an online recruiting scam that’s using the name of an actual company with Houston ties. “I’ve been in transition for 14 months,” said laid off energy worker Peter Lynton. “Out of a job.” Lynton currently helps other laid off workers prepare for possible interviews. Recently, he thought things were looking up, thanks to a blind ad on Zip Recruiter for a job right up his alley in oil and gas. “I got a note from a company that I researched. It’s a real company,” Lynton said. The company is called Intertek. Lynton received a professional-looking offer letter following initial contact and a suspicious 5-minute phone interview with someone in Nigeria. It turned out to be one of several red flags.
