Latest scam offers ‘settlement’ from Western Union

NewsTimes - 6/21/2017 - Jim Shay - The latest scam directed at Connecticut resident in an email comes from someone claiming to be the acting chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. The emails claim to be from Maureen Ohlhausen, Acting Chairman of the FTC, but it’s a scam, according to the state Department of Consumer Protection. The email asks you to supply your bank account information so you can get money from the government’s settlement with Western Union. There is a kernel of truth in the scam: The FTC is involved in a $586 million settlement with Western Union, but the U.S. Department of Justice will run the refunds process, which hasn’t started yet.
